It’s said that leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less.

You may feel like you don’t have much influence, but the truth is that you’re a leader, whether you realize it or not.

Consequently, you will benefit from learning about leadership qualities, leadership skills, and leadership development, no matter who you are or what your situation.

Leadership development is extremely important, but few people realize where it begins.

The first and most important person you lead is yourself!

This also tends to be the most difficult leadership assignment because it inevitably involves self-discipline, self-denial, and self-sacrifice – and none of these things are popular or easy.

This is why leadership development is critical. We cannot do a good job of leading anyone else unless we first learn to lead ourselves well. Leading ourselves well requires leadership development.

“Leaders must model an anchored life, acting from character, not emotions.”

– John Maxwell

Leadership Qualities

Believe it or not, you already possess many leadership qualities and the potential to be a great leader. Many of these leadership qualities come naturally to you because they are God-given talents.

In fact, you may not even realize you possess genuine leadership qualities!

We often think of “natural born leaders” as stoic, self-assured military types or high-powered, polished executives. But there are many priceless leadership qualities that may be less obvious.

Examples of such leadership qualities include:

  • Enthusiasm
  • Empathy
  • Active Listening
  • Fortitude
  • Encouragement
  • Patience

The list goes on…

Don’t discount your leadership qualities just because they come easily to you. Instead, embrace leadership development and learn to harness your natural leadership qualities. Doing so will allow you to have a more positive impact on the world around you.

Leadership Skills

Note that you can also embrace leadership development to improve leadership skills that do not come as naturally. Just as we all have strong, natural leadership qualities, we also have weaknesses. We can all benefit from leadership development to mitigate these weaknesses with leadership skills and thereby maximize our natural leadership qualities.
